Sometimes referred to as The Telegraph Wire, this con dates back to when race results were transmitted by telegraph to off-track betting parlors. The movie The Sting shows a prime example of this. Modern technology has pretty much rendered it obsolete but it can still be accomplished by setting up a false betting parlor (see The Big Store) and delaying race results. The Mark is convinced to put down bets that are “sure things” until he finally places a very large bet. This, of course, does not pay off for him.
